Participatory Engagement with Local Stakeholders

In line with Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, Swiss International University is committed to ensuring that local stakeholders have formal and meaningful avenues to participate in university decision-making processes. This includes residents, local government authorities, civil society groups, and specialized community organizations.

1. Purpose

The purpose of this commitment is to foster inclusive governance, community-informed planning, and collaborative growth. SIU believes that open dialogue with external stakeholders strengthens both the university and the communities in which we operate.

2. Recognized Stakeholder Groups

Participatory engagement mechanisms are open to:

  • Local residents living near our campus locations

  • Municipal and regional authorities

  • Educational partners, including local schools and training centers

  • Civil society organizations, such as NGOs, cultural associations, environmental groups

  • Community-based organizations, including those working in refugee support, social inclusion, and youth empowerment

3. Mechanisms for Participation

SIU has established the following formal structures to ensure stakeholder involvement in key areas of institutional planning and development:

✅ Community Advisory Panels

Each campus may host a Community Advisory Panel that includes representatives from local stakeholders. These panels:

  • Meet at least twice annually

  • Provide feedback on university development plans, infrastructure, and local impacts

  • Discuss joint community engagement or educational projects

✅ Public Consultations and Town Halls

  • Held during the planning phase of new buildings, programs, or community-facing initiatives

  • Open to residents, municipal partners, and local organizations

  • Minutes are recorded and shared with the university council for consideration

✅ Partnership Forums

  • Organized annually to gather input from NGOs, cultural centers, and local businesses

  • Focus on long-term collaboration in areas such as sustainability, culture, and education

✅ Stakeholder Representation on Committees

  • In select cases, external stakeholders may be invited to serve on advisory committees (e.g., urban development, social responsibility, cultural programming)

4. Outcomes and Accountability

  • Feedback from participatory bodies is systematically documented and reviewed by the university's Strategic Planning Office.

  • Outcomes are reflected in institutional development plans, sustainability strategies, and social outreach programs.

  • A summary of stakeholder engagement activities is published annually in the Community Impact Report.

5. Contact and Involvement

Stakeholders interested in participating or learning more about our engagement mechanisms are welcome to contact us.

At Swiss International University, we view local engagement not as an obligation—but as a foundation for shared success. Participatory governance ensures that our institution grows with, and not apart from, the communities we serve.
