VBNN Smart Education Group, as the governing management entity for Swiss International University (SIU), is committed to institutional leadership in environmental conservation. In direct alignment with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15 (Life On Land), VBNN enforces binding, group-wide policies and operational directives across all managed institutions, academic facilities, and physical developments.

Through active land restoration, species monitoring, sustainable campus construction, invasive species control, and community collaboration, VBNN Smart Education Group ensures that all university operations actively protect and enhance terrestrial ecosystems.


1. Group Policy on Land Conservation, Restoration, and Sustainable Use (Indicator 15.3.1)

VBNN Smart Education Group enforces an institutional policy to ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems associated with the university, in particular forests, mountains and drylands.

Key Operational Directives:

  • Ecosystem Protection: All managed SIU campus sites located near sensitive terrestrial biomes—including alpine mountain zones, temperate forests, and arid drylands—must maintain zero-degradation operational boundaries.

  • Active Restoration Projects: University operational teams engage in mandatory land-restoration protocols, reforesting cleared campus zones and restoring natural soil health.

  • Sustainable Land Utilization: Campus ground management practices mandate non-destructive land use, prohibiting deforestation and soil compaction across all university property.


2. Policy for Monitoring IUCN Red Listed and Conservation Species (Indicator 15.3.2)

To safeguard threatened flora and fauna, VBNN maintains an institutional policy to identify, monitor and protect any IUCN Red Listed species and national conservation list species with habitats in areas affected by the operation of Swiss International University.

Key Operational Directives:

  • Pre-Operation Surveys: Prior to any campus expansion or physical site modification, qualified environmental assessment teams must identify any IUCN Red List or national conservation list species inhabiting or migrating through the area.

  • Continuous Biodiversity Monitoring: Managed campuses maintain continuous biological monitoring programs to track population trends of protected native plants, birds, insects, and mammals.

  • Habitat Protection Zones: Identified habitats of endangered or vulnerable species are designated as protected natural reserves where physical entry and construction are strictly prohibited.

Sustainable infrastructure requires proactive ecological integration. VBNN mandates that all managed institutions include local biodiversity into any planning and development process (e.g. construction of new buildings).

  • Ecological Impact Assessments: Architectural plans for any new university building or infrastructure must include a comprehensive biodiversity impact report before approval.

  • Green Building Standards: New construction projects must incorporate green roofs, native plant landscaping, bird-safe window designs, and permeable surfaces to maintain local wildlife corridors.

  • Zero-Net-Loss Biodiversity Principle: Any necessary disruption to local vegetation during construction must be offset by creating twice the area of native biological habitat elsewhere on campus grounds.


4. Policy on Alien Species Impact Reduction (Indicator 15.3.4)

Invasive biological species represent a major threat to native biomes. VBNN Smart Education Group enforces a group policy to reduce the impact of alien species on campus.

Key Operational Directives:

  • Prohibition of Non-Native Landscaping: University landscaping departments are strictly prohibited from planting non-native or invasive flora species on campus grounds.

  • Invasive Species Eradication Programs: Facilities management teams conduct annual audits to identify, isolate, and safely remove invasive alien plant and animal species using eco-friendly control methods.

  • Biosecurity Controls: All incoming agricultural materials, soil, and landscaping supplies undergo biosecurity screening to prevent the accidental introduction of alien flora or agricultural pests.

1. PURPOSE & INTENT

VBNN Smart Education Group establishes this binding policy to govern all land-use, construction, facility maintenance, and environmental management operations across Swiss International University campuses. This policy ensures full alignment with UN SDG 15 targets for terrestrial ecosystem protection.

2. MANDATORY POLICY STATEMENTS

  • Section 2.1: Terrestrial Ecosystem Conservation & Restoration

    VBNN mandates the protection, sustainable management, and active restoration of all terrestrial ecosystems associated with university operations, with specific conservation protocols enforced for forests, mountain regions, and drylands.

  • Section 2.2: Protection of IUCN Red Listed & Conservation Species

    All university campuses must maintain protocols to identify, monitor, and protect habitats of any species listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species or national conservation registers affected by university operations.

  • Section 2.3: Biodiversity Integration in Real Estate & Infrastructure Development

    Local biodiversity conservation must be formally integrated into every stage of campus planning, architectural design, and physical building construction. No infrastructure project shall proceed without verified biodiversity mitigation plans.

  • Section 2.4: Prevention & Management of Invasive Alien Species

    University grounds management must enforce strict controls to prevent, manage, and reduce the impact of invasive alien species on all campus properties, strictly utilizing native species for all landscaping projects.

  • Section 2.5: Community Engagement in Shared Ecosystem Management
